BTS on Sunday (15 May) became the most awarded group in the history of the Billboard Music Awards since their first win in 2017.

BTS broke the record, which was previously held by Destiny’s Child, at the 2022 BBMAs, after the band won three of the six categories it was nominated for – including Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist and and Top Selling Song for its hit track “Butter”.

Destiny’s Child has won a total of 11 awards, and held the record for 17 years before BTS claimed it.

The group, composed of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, has won a trophy at every BBMAs ceremony since 2017. BTS is currently tied with now-disbanded British boy band One Direction for most wins in the “Top Duo/Group” category.

One Direction won the Billboard Music Award for best group act in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

The BTS Army, as the group’s fans are collectively known, celebrated the group’s historic run at the BBMAs on Twitter with congratulatory messages and posts.

One fan wrote: “BTS making history is like me making excuses to not study. It happens all the time!”

The BBMAs were held at MGM Grand Garden Arena is Las Vegas Sunday, with rapper P Diddy hosting the ceremony.

The Weeknd has earned the most award nominations this year, with nods in 17 categories, while Doja Cat’s 14 nominations made her a close second. Justin Bieber, Kanye West, and Olivia Rodrigo received 13 nominations each, while Drake was nominated in 11 categories.

The night’s big winners include Drake who took home five awards – including Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Album – for his album Certified Lover Boy which was released last year.

Another highlight of the night was Travis Scott’s return to the stage for the first time since the Astroworld tragedy. During the performance, Scott debuted his new single “Mafia” during a performance at the Billboard Music Awards 2022.

It was the 31 year-old rapper’s first televised performance on Sunday (15 May) since the Astroworld tragedy last November.

Host P. Diddy had made the announcement last week that Scott would be performing on the night,

“I have some great breaking news. This just in,” said the 52-year-old rapper, whose real name is Sean Combs, adding: “For the Billboard Music Awards this Sunday, I made a request, I made a demand. I said ‘My brother Travis Scott has to perform.’ Diddy is hosting the show – I’m executive producing – he has to perform.’

“And NBC said ‘Yes.’ So, it’s going down Sunday. Travis Scott will be performing.”

In addition to Scott, controversial singer Morgan Wallen along with other top artists like Megan Thee Stallion, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silk Sonic, Ed Sheeran, Mary J Blige, and Florence and the Machine also performed during the ceremony in Las Vegas.
