Every fantasy novel asks readers to believe in something impossible.
Magic.
Ancient kingdoms.
Legendary heroes.
Jennifer Aitken asks readers to believe in something far more difficult.
Themselves.
At first glance, Shadow Born, the fourth novel in her Legends of Light & Shadows saga, has everything fantasy readers love: powerful magic, dangerous enemies, forgotten legends, and a universe hanging in the balance. But beneath the epic adventure lies a quieter story, one about self-doubt, courage, and discovering the strength that often exists long before we recognize it ourselves.
For Aitken, that journey isn’t simply fiction.
It’s personal.
“Lucius’ crisis of confidence is a reflection of myself,” she says. “As a writer, self-doubt is part of the process, but in my personal life it has also been a constant companion of mine that I am constantly working to shed.”
That admission gives Shadow Born its emotional heartbeat.
Although Lucius battles forces that exist only within fantasy, the fears driving him are deeply familiar. Questions about identity, confidence, purpose, and whether we’re truly capable of becoming who we’re meant to be are struggles that reach far beyond the pages of any novel.
Aitken believes nearly everyone arrives at that crossroads eventually.
“I think when we are children or young adults we have a very romantic idea of what life is going to be like,” she explains. “But life always has surprises in store.”
Rather than seeing those unexpected turns as failures, she believes they often become life’s greatest teachers.
“Just because the picture of your life or yourself changes, it isn’t always a bad thing.”
That perspective shapes every chapter of Shadow Born. While the novel follows Lucius through dangerous lands and impossible choices, Aitken says the real story has always been about learning to trust the strength already within him.
“We have all experienced moments or periods in our life where we feel like we’re drowning in a life that doesn’t belong to us,” she says. “Just like Lucius, it takes little steps, tiny changes, to begin to see how much strength and confidence we all already possess. We sometimes simply forget it’s there.”
Perhaps that’s why readers connect so deeply with fantasy.
The castles, creatures, and kingdoms may be imaginary.
The emotions are not.
One scene, in particular, continues to move Aitken every time she revisits it. Elowen willingly chooses to help Lucius shoulder an unimaginable burden, fully aware of the sacrifice it will eventually require.
“She sees his potential,” Aitken says. “She sees where he is weak, and she can help and doesn’t think twice about the sacrifice.”
It’s a moment that reflects another belief woven quietly throughout the novel: sometimes the people who believe in us first make it possible for us to believe in ourselves.
Aitken knows that from experience.
When asked who shaped her own journey, she immediately points to her parents.
“They have supported me, my dreams, and always led me by example with their own actions,” she says. “They taught me to follow my dreams no matter what.”
That unwavering encouragement gave her permission to keep writing through uncertainty, something every creative person eventually faces.
Ironically, despite building an epic fantasy world filled with carefully imagined history and mythology, Aitken admits she doesn’t always control where her own stories go.
As her characters continue to grow, she has learned to trust them as much as she trusts herself.
“Sometimes the characters are right,” she says.
It’s an observation many readers may recognize outside of fiction as well. Life rarely unfolds exactly as we planned. Sometimes the unexpected path becomes the one we were always meant to take.
Looking back at the younger version of herself who first imagined the Legends of Light & Shadows series, Aitken knows exactly what she would say.
“I would tell her not to be scared.”
Then she offers what may be the most powerful lesson of all, not just for writers, but for anyone chasing a dream.
“There is an audience for everyone, but the most accomplishing feeling is writing the story you want to read.”
It’s a simple sentence, yet it captures the heart of both Jennifer Aitken’s journey and Shadow Born.
The greatest battles are not always fought with swords or magic.
Sometimes they begin quietly, with a decision to trust yourself, take the next step, and become the person you were always capable of becoming.
