In 1978, he allied himself with liberal San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk to fight the Briggs Initiative, a ballot referendum that proposed preventing gay and lesbian teachers from teaching in public schools.

Mike’s own influence was instrumental. He convinced Ronald Reagan, then a former California governor, to oppose the initiative publicly, helping turn public opinion and kill the measure. This partnership was a turning point in California politics, demonstrating that conscience could be greater than ideology. It also established Mike as a lifelong defender of the rights of the LGBTQ community. In 2023, he opposed Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s bill mandating businesses post signage if they accepted LGBT individuals using the restroom of their choice. Mike’s effective legal challenge led the court to rule that the law was unconstitutional, a move that was viewed by many as a positive step for both equality and free enterprise, and he was pleased to have challenged a law that was widely regarded as unconstitutional and discriminatory against the LGBT community.

The decision was seen as a reaffirmation of a principle central to much of his work: that fairness should be a priority in legislation. It also showed the enduring utility of veteran public figures who speak out to protect the vulnerable, rather than remain silent for political expediency.

A Legacy Outside the Spotlight

Mike’s legacy extends beyond personal achievements to philanthropic initiatives benefiting education, social justice, and the arts. Through his foundations and endowments, he has granted scholarships and resources to institutions aligned with his vision of opportunity for all. The Mike Curb Foundation has contributed over 200 million dollars to charitable causes with an emphasis on the underserved communities and educational institutions such as the Curb Center at Vanderbilt University and the Curb College at Belmont University. As the primary contributor to Belmont University, Curb spoke publicly against the University when it terminated a soccer coach who identified as part of the LGBTQ community. Curb collaborated with Belmont to negotiate a policy change that would prevent similar discrimination.

Mike’s work is marked by a common thread: progress founded upon principle. Those who know him attest that he doesn’t view advocacy as a secondary endeavor but as primary to his overall mission to enhance lives.
