For over six decades, Mike Curb has been at the crossroads of culture, commerce, and social responsibility. While acting as Governor and serving as Lieutenant Governor of California, he used his position to advance causes that promote human dignity and inclusion.

The belief that all people are entitled to equal opportunity, no matter who they are or whom they love, still shapes much of his work. Through both public action and private advocacy, Mike has long demonstrated that leadership is speaking out when fairness is at stake. He consistently fights against discrimination wherever he finds it.

Building Bridges Through Action

Mike Curb’s entry into civil rights activism began amid one of America’s politically turbulent periods. Even as a young Republican party leader in California, he didn’t hesitate to cross political lines in the pursuit of justice.

In 1978, he allied himself with liberal San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk to fight the Briggs Initiative, a ballot referendum that proposed preventing gay and lesbian teachers from teaching in public schools.

Mike’s own influence was instrumental. He convinced Ronald Reagan, then a former California governor, to oppose the initiative publicly, helping turn public opinion and kill the measure. This partnership was a turning point in California politics, demonstrating that conscience could be greater than ideology. It also established Mike as a lifelong defender of the rights of the LGBTQ community. A video of Mike Curb and Ronald Reagan opposing the measure was included in the motion picture Milk, where Sean Penn won an Academy Award for playing the part of Harvey Milk.

A Voice of Courage in Divided Times

Throughout his professional life, Mike has continually pushed back against discrimination where he finds it. His activism has not been restricted to symbolic actions; rather, it has had legal, civic, and cultural components.

In 2023, he opposed Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s bill mandating businesses post signage if they accepted LGBT individuals using the restroom of their choice. Mike’s effective legal challenge led the court to rule that the law was unconstitutional, a move that was viewed by many as a positive step for both equality and free enterprise, and he was pleased to have challenged a law that was widely regarded as unconstitutional and discriminatory against the LGBT community.

The decision was seen as a reaffirmation of a principle central to much of his work: that fairness should be a priority in legislation. It also showed the enduring utility of veteran public figures who speak out to protect the vulnerable, rather than remain silent for political expediency.

A Legacy Outside the Spotlight

Mike’s legacy extends beyond personal achievements to philanthropic initiatives benefiting education, social justice, and the arts. Through his foundations and endowments, he has granted scholarships and resources to institutions aligned with his vision of opportunity for all. The Mike Curb Foundation has contributed over 200 million dollars to charitable causes with an emphasis on the underserved communities and educational institutions such as the Curb Center at Vanderbilt University and the Curb College at Belmont University. As the primary contributor to Belmont University, Curb spoke publicly against the University when it terminated a soccer coach who identified as part of the LGBTQ community. Curb collaborated with Belmont to negotiate a policy change that would prevent similar discrimination.

Mike’s work is marked by a common thread: progress founded upon principle. Those who know him attest that he doesn’t view advocacy as a secondary endeavor but as primary to his overall mission to enhance lives.

Inclusion Through Leadership

Mike Curb’s case is particularly significant because it combines cultural leadership with civic engagement. He has demonstrated that business leaders can influence public values as easily as elected representatives. Tempering his professional standing with a moral commitment, he consistently reinforces the idea that equality should be for everyone.

Mike demonstrates that those in positions of prominence can use their power to build bridges rather than widen differences. His readiness to risk his reputation for the sake of equality remains a defining aspect of his leadership.

Renewing a Commitment to Equality

As the quest for LGBTQ+ rights continues, so does the need for advocates who understand the weight of their words and actions. Mike Curb’s record of engagement demonstrates that progress depends on persistence. Through his example, he demonstrates that speaking out is a responsibility, not just an act of rebellion.

Mike’s life and career reflect the philosophy that equality makes communities stronger. His continued efforts remind us that fighting for the rights of others is seen by many as a higher calling and one of the significant ways to contribute to the public good.
